The Pro-Life Feminist Movement and the Challenge to Feminism

Dr. Laury Oaks

Dr. Oaks presents a critical analysis of how the pro-life feminist movement attempts to shape cultural attitudes about both abortion and feminism. She considers the appeal that the pro-life feminist message may have for young women, who have only known polarized debates over the legal status of abortion, and analyzes what the pro-life feminist movement's claim to feminism means for the place of the right to abortion as a central component of the current feminist movement.

Whatever Happened to Jane Roe: The Norma McCorvey Story

More than a quarter of a century ago, in January 1973, Norma McCorvey became one of the most influential figures in American history--except nobody knew who she was. In 1969 Norma was pregnant for the third time. She unsuccessfully sought an illegal abortion and ended up being the plaintiff, Jane Roe, in a class action lawsuit against the Texas abortion law. The lawsuit ultimately ended up in the U.S. Supreme Court and resulted in the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in all 50 States. In 1995, Norma was working for an abortion clinic called A Choice for Women in Dallas, Texas. In March of 1995, the Operation Rescue National office moved in next door. Its director, Rev. Flip Benham, began preaching to Norma about the biblical position on abortion. His words fell flat with Norma until the day he apologized to her for not speaking the truth in love. This apology became the springboard for Norma to become open to the message Rev. Benham had for her. One day in June, Norma was invited to church and later accepted the invitation. From that point on, Norma's life changed. Here is the entire story. ~ Norma now devotes her time to an organization she co-founded called "Roe No More Ministry."
