Earl L. Stewart is an Associate Professor in the Department of Black Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara and adjunct to the College of Creative Studies. He received his B.A. in Music Education from Southern University, Baton Rouge, studying under Walter Craig and the late Alvin Batiste in its Jazz Institute. He then received his M.A. and D.M.A. in Music Composition from the University of Texas at Austin, studying with Karl Korte, Joseph Schwantner, and world-renowned author of Counterpoint (the late) Kent Kennan.

Stewart’s compositions have been performed by soloists Brenda Wimberly, Carolyn Sebron, and Metropolitan Opera diva Barbara Conrad; choreographer Chuck Davis; jazz artists Julian Cannonball Adderly, Alvin Batiste, and Kent Jordan; classical pianists Lucius Whethersby and Richard Thompson and classical violinist Rachel Jordan. Earl Stewart defines his music as “eclectic.” His music touches the part of us that is uniquely “American” with a technique that is at once both African and European.
