Core Energy Efficiency Strategies
from UC Santa Barbara's Research

Tony Cheetham • Shuji Nakamura • Matthew Tirrell
Ernst von Weizsäcker

To take an unbiased look at how our nation makes the transition from dependency on carbon-based fuels to a sustainable, alternative fuels-based future was this summit’s mission; as well as to present current and emerging energy technologies for short- and long-term solutions to world needs, with additional focus on the socio-economic and political factors which enable or obstruct their adoption. Experts from around the globe came together to seek alternative energy solutions, examine the trade-offs and barriers associated with marketability, and to grapple with related issues.

Panel Moderator Tony Cheetham is Director for the International Center for Materials Research, UC Santa Barbara. Other panelists include Shuji Nakamura, UCSB Professor and winner of Finland’s 2006 Millennium Technology Prize for his continuing efforts to make cheaper and more efficient light sources; Matthew Tirrell, Dean of Engineering at UCSB and the Richard A. Auhil Professor in Chemical Engineering with a joint appointment in Materials; and Ernst vn Weizsäcker, Dean of UCSB’s Bren School, former President of the Wuppertal Institute and Chairman of the Bundestag’s Environment Committee.
