Emerging Energy Technologies Summit 2007
Session Three / Program 2

Sustainable Development/Communities

Ernst von Weizsäcker • Panel Discussion

To take an unbiased look at how our nation makes the transition from dependency on carbon-based fuels to a sustainable, alternative fuels-based future was this summit’s mission; as well as to present current and emerging energy technologies for short- and long-term solutions to world needs, with additional focus on the socio-economic and political factors which enable or obstruct their adoption. Experts from around the globe came together to seek alternative energy solutions, examine the trade-offs and barriers associated with marketability, and to grapple with related issues.

Ernst von Weizsäcker joined the Bren School as Dean in January 2006. He spent nearly a decade as founding President of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, and Energy in the North Rhine/Westphalian Science Center in Germany. Dr. von Weizsäcker is a member of the Club of Rome, a global think tank devoted to improving society, and he served on the World Commission on the Social Dimensions of Globalization.

A lively panel discussion follows, involving David Rohy, Principal, Rohy Consulting Associates, former Vice Chair, California Energy Commission; Gary Barsley, Director of Commercial Projects for SolarWorld Industries; Michal Moore, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy at the University of Calgary in Alberta; and Byron Washom, President, Spencer Management Associates, and Senior International Advisor to the U.S. Department of Energy and the World Bank.
