The New College of Creative Studies Musical 2006
This program is the result of a unique experiment undertaken for only
the 2nd time at UCSB’s College of Creative Studies. Under the
direction of Dr. Jeremy Haladyna, talented students in Music, Literature
and Dramatic Arts united in a common purpose: to create a new musical “from
the ground up.” And for 2006, an additional directive was added: “do
it for TELEVISION.”
Starting with only blank sheets of paper, composers and writers went
to work at full speed, producing book and music (in piano score) between
late September 2005 and mid-January 2006. The piece then went into
immediate rehearsal, and was presented to trial houses three times
in early April 2006. It was swiftly taped for TV at the end of the
theatrical run. Kristin Williams, an assistant instructor on the course
as stage director, sings the leading role of Chloe, the office girl
seeking love online. Technical direction is by Bo Bell; television
direction is by Todd Gillespie.
The Janitor, the savviest person in the office, guides us through this
amusing story of an office girl too wrapped up in her work to devote
much time to finding the right guy. She conceives the idea of looking
for love online and is encouraged in this by the office busybody, Gladys.
George, the young office IT-guy, has eyes for Chloe but just isn’t
getting noticed. Meanwhile, Chloe takes the plunge into the cyberworld
and finds Craig, who could indeed be her “Mr. Perfect”…unless… could
the real “Mr. Perfect” be much closer at hand?
Support for this program came from the College of Creative Studies
and from a generous grant by Robert and Ellen Raede.
