Earl Stewart

The Afro Inventions featured in this program were inspired by the jazz baroque experimentations of the Modern Jazz Quartet, the contrapuntal stylngs of jazz pianist Billy Taylor and, of course, the inventions of Johann Sebastian Bach. The first six inventions here are derived from Earl Stewart’s Afro Inventions Book One (Identity 38.1), a book of 12 inventions composed in 1995. The last two are derived from Afro Inventions (Identity 18.1) composed in 1988. The poetry and short story featured on the program were composed in the mid 1990s and are meant to express the author’s political and spiritual thoughts.

Earl L. Stewart, D. M. A., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Black Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The program was sponsored by the Department of Black Studies, the Multicultural Center, the College of Creative Studies and the Center for Black Studies..
