The Journey: In Search of Our Origins

Ruse, Tiffney, & Wells

This panel discussion with Wells, Ruse & Tiffney relates to the philosophy and limits of science as well as the adequacy of Darwinian mechanisms to account for the diversity and disparity of life on Earth.

Michael Ruse, Ph.D., is Professor of Philosophy and Zoology at Florida State University and author of many books, including The Philosophy of Biology. He is also the founder and editor of the journal, Biology & Philosophy, as well as editor of the “Cambridge University Press Series in the Philosophy of Biology.”

Bruce Tiffney, Ph.D., is a Professor in Geological Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research embraces both classical and descriptive systematics based on anatomy and morphology, and broader, more speculative, hypotheses. His special research interest centers on the study of fossil fruits and seeds of flowering plants. He has authored numerous scientific papers.

Jonathan Wells earned two Ph.D.s, one in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley and one in Religious Studies from Yale. Wells is the author of Icons of Evolution: Why Much of What We Teach About Evolution Is Wrong (Regnery Publishing, 2002). Examples include the peppered moth, embryology, Darwin’s finches, and the fossil record. He is currently working on a book criticizing the over-emphasis on genes in biology and medicine.
