Rumors of Another World

Philip Yancey

Drawing from his book, Rumors of Another World: What on Earth Are We Missing? (Zondervan, 2003), Philip Yancey tells us that we may be missing the supernatural hidden in everyday life, for when he investigates the natural world, he recognizes the supernatural hiding in plain view. Nature and super nature are not two separate worlds, but different expressions of the same reality. To engage the world as a whole, we need a more supernatural awareness of the natural world. Yancey assures his audience that the grace-filled result will be a life of beauty, purpose, freedom, and faith. Philip Yancey contrasts this positive discovery with his negative experience growing up in a graceless church. He confesses that his childhood church did a good job of misrepresenting God, which was the hardest thing for him to unlearn. He says he was raised in a time when things were very racist, very angry, legalistic, and he came to imagine God as a frowning, scowling enforcer trying to catch him doing something wrong. He says his church used words like "grace," but he didn't really experience grace growing up. Always surprised at what his readers and audiences let him get away with, author Yancey talks about sex, lies, and life on the evangelical edge. Filled with humor and personal stories, this talk delighted the youth in attendance and perhaps raised a few eyebrows among the “older generation.”
